The Lyndon AMS crew hosts a lot of events every year! They range from being smaller events to very well attended and popular events. Most years they will host the same annual ones. Events that Lyndon AMS hosts count toward the active member status for the NESC discount. So participating if you are a part of the club is encouraged!

Involvement Fair: Each year, the campus holds the involvement fair for returning and new students to get involved and join clubs! This was our Exec Board last year at the Involvement Fair. This is not a formal event and does not count toward active member status.

Burke Mountain Hike: This was the first event of last year. It is a typical annual one and is the first event to count toward active member status. There is also a Mount Washington Hike that is very popular. It did not happen last year due to weather.

Fall Barbecue: There is a typical fall barbecue every year. This is one of the most popular and fun events! It is a great opportunity for first years to get to know upperclassmen, also. Last year it would have featured a hike or a beach day if weather had been better. Instead everyone went to Lake Willoughby to launch a weather balloon in the strong winds. After, they had a nice barbecue, enjoyed the movie Twister, played board games, and drank Dr. Jay’s homemade tea!

Guest Speakers: Each year we have many guest speakers. These are meteorologists or graduate students, sometimes who are alumni from Lyndon! They know what it is like to go through the major and they speak to us on what they do in the field now. The image below features Meteorologist Kevin Skarupa.

Car Wash: An often annual event is the car wash. Students from Lyndon AMS volunteer to help raise money for the club for NESC! Last year $300 was raised. This event counts toward active member status, especially.

First Inch Contest: As a popular annual event, the club hosts the 1st Inch Contest that anyone on campus can participate in. One just has to guess when the Weather Station will register the 1st inch on campus! This event raises a lot of money for our club as well. People from the club work the table to gain events toward active member status.

GLASS: A conference for ATM students hosted by SUNY Oswego’s AMS chapter. This is a smaller conference than NESC and is a good start if NESC is intimidating. Nevertheless, it is a good experience.

NEKYS Walk: Each year, a group goes to NEKYS to raise money for the local homeless shelter and youth services. Last year Lyndon AMS won 2nd place for the highest amount raised for NEKYS! Doughnuts, coffee, and other treats are served at the event by the shelter. It is followed by a couple mile walk around Saint J to show support.

Sector Search: A group of 1st and 2nd year NVU-Lyndon Department of Atmospheric Sciences students went out and visited different sectors of meteorology. Last year we went to Plymouth State for Grad School, NWS in Boston, and a weather/news station in Providence, RI!

Talent Show: Each year this event happens and it is one of the most favorite! ATM/AMS students work the table to sell tickets to raise money for the group. Events can be claimed by working the table and sometimes by participating in the talent show. It is a fun time! Last year Radek and his group performed a comedy hit. The acts are always great!

NESC: The biggest event of the year! This is the whole center of our club as it is student run and one of the longest running student run weather conferences. It is a lot of fun and is a great experience to network. It is also a great experience for first-years before going to the National AMS Conference. Students in Thesis will present their abstracts at this conference as well as many other meteorologists and students from different universities. You can definitely find something you’re interested in here!

Spring 2020: This one was an interesting one. Due to the pandemic, most people got evacuated from campus, and the club could no longer meet in person. The effects have still carried over into Fall 2020 for the current year’s AMS and Board. However, we still managed to meet over zoom!

We had one club meeting and elections over zoom to bring you the officers we have now!

Typically there would be a Spring Barbecue as well as a Youth Science Fair, but those had to be cancelled due to the virus. Hopefully Spring 2021 will tell a better tale! We look forward to it!
